Understanding Fixed vs Growth Mindset in Students

"Mindset is a characteristic or a mental attitude that determines how one understands and reacts to a particular situation."

Mindset has a great effect on your creativity. It can change your outcomes by raising or lowering your productivity. Keeping a positive mindset is the first rule to follow while climbing the success ladder. A positive mindset acts as a support system that helps you reach the goals. When you have decided to adopt a positive mindset, you have decided to be successful.

According to renowned psychologist Carol Dweck, there are two types of mindsets, "Fixed" and "Growth" Mindset.

In a fixed mindset, a person inherits character, intelligence, and creative ability by birth which can't be changed in any way and success is the verification of that inherent intelligence. In simple terms, in a fixed mindset, intelligence is fixed and static.

A growth mindset focuses on the process, rather than the outcome itself.  It focuses on being challenged and does not take failure as evidence of failure but as an opportunity for growth and to develop existing abilities. In a growth mindset, intelligence is believed to be dynamic and brain developments are based on experiences.

Mindset also plays an important role in academics. Students with a fixed mindset always believe that intelligence and talent are instinctive characteristics. They often avoid taking challenges due to the fear of failing. A fixed mindset turns students into non-learners as they follow only one rule - ‘look smart always at any cost'.

On the other hand, students with a growth mindset love to face challenges in order to improve their capabilities. They believe that intelligence and talent must be refined over time and hard work always brings success.

Students with a growth mindset are more likely to get the most out of their efforts. They do not ignore criticism rather they try to learn from it. They try to overcome challenges rather than avoid them, and always believe that effort increases their abilities over time.
