What is Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) states to the ability to perceive control and evaluate emotions. Some academics suggest that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while others claim it is an inherited characteristic. The ability to express and control our own emotions is important, but so is our ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Psychologists mention to this ability as emotional intelligence, and some experts even suggest that it can be more important than IQ.

"Emotional Intelligence," they defined emotional intelligence as, "the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to differentiate among them and to use this evidence to guide one's thoughtful and actions"

Emotional intelligence consists of four attributes:

Self-awareness – You identify your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior, know your strengths and weaknesses, and have self-confidence.

Self-management – You're able to control thoughtless feelings and behaviors, manage your emotions in healthy ways, take initiative, follow through on assurances, and adapt to changing circumstances.

Social awareness – You can know the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.

Relationship management – You know how to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team, and manage conflict.

The Four Branches of Emotional Intelligence

  • Perceiving Emotions: The first stage in understanding emotions is to correctly perceive them. In many cases, this might involve understanding nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions.
  • Reasoning with Emotions: The next step includes using emotions to promote thinking and cognitive activity.
  • Understanding Emotions: The emotions that we observe can carry a wide variety of meanings. If someone is expressing angry emotions, the observer must understand the cause of their anger and what it might mean.
  • Managing Emotions:  The ability to manage emotions efficiently is a key part of emotional intelligence. Regulating emotions, responding appropriately and responding to the emotions of others are all important aspect of emotional management.

Emotional intelligence affects

  • Your performance at work. Emotional intelligence can help you direct the social difficulties of the workplace lead and motivate others, and excel in your job. In fact, when it comes to determining job candidates, many companies now view emotional intelligence as being as vital as technical ability and require EQ testing before acquisition.
  • Your physical health. If you're unable to accomplish your stress levels, it can lead to serious health problems. Uncontrolled stress can raise blood pressure, overturn the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. The first step to improving emotional intelligence is to learn how to relieve stress.
  • Your mental health. Restrained stress can also impact your mental health, making you vulnerable to worry and depression. If you are unable to recognize and manage your emotions, you'll also be open to mood swings, while an inability to form strong relationships can leave you feeling lonely and isolated.
  • Your relationships. By understanding your emotions and how to control them, you're better able to precise how you feel and understand how others are feeling. This permits you to communicate more effectively and forge stronger relationships, both at work and in your personal life.
